Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems (which is now a subsidiary of Oracle Corporation) and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems' Java platform. The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model and fewer low-level facilities. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode (class file) that can run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture. Java is a general-purpose, concurrent, class-based, object-oriented language that is specifically designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It is intended to let application developers "write once, run anywhere". Java is currently one of the most popular programming languages in use, particularly for client-server web applications.

New Year's Message from the Deputy Director
Colleagues! As we prepare to say good-bye to 2009, I’d like to highlight the achievements we’ve made, and acknowledge all of the contributions the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) has made toward sustained growth.
BIE has pioneered new approaches to: (1) improve teaching and learning within our schools, (2) conduct business differently, and (3) make data driven decisions in the best interest of the students we serve. Our success is a direct result of our focus on using what works best for the students within our organization. The BIE has seen the fruits of these labors in how the unique needs are being addressed within our school communities. These efforts will continue to affect a new generation as we enter the new decade, and as we continue to explore strategies to improve the proficiency levels of our students.
